Develop a 1-2 minute activity for scavenger hunt participants that incorporates the theme of trees and your station’s clue.
PROJECT INTENT
The event aimed to bring together the Davis community through biking, a quintessential Davis activity, and some friendly competition for locally donated prizes. As teams biked around looking for clue stations, they would learn a bit about Urban Forestry and the diversity of tree species that exist in Davis. My station touched on the theme of activism, and the physical motions participants went through-checking off statements, signing their names at the bottom, then dropping the cards into a collection box, was meant to make them feel as though they had exercised their individual voices. The activity would have a larger reach than just the event, as the cards would be delivered to the Davis City Council to raise the issue of proper tree planting.
DRIVING QUESTIONS
How can we make the activity educational while keeping it within a small time frame?
How do we strengthen the connection between the tree's defining characteristic(s) and the activity's components
How can we keep the activity understandable and engaging for all age groups?
DESIGN SOLUTION
The facilitation team set the graphic identity for the event and created promotional material to market it. Leading up to the day, I did community outreach at the local farmer’s market-one of the locations we identified where we could garner attention. My clue led participants to Redwood Park, which provided the opportunity to teach people about tree suitability in the Urban Environment and get them to advocate for proper tree planting. I designed a simple infographic and instructional sign that explained why Redwoods do not grow well in the urban landscape. Riders would also receive a small handout about where they could visit Redwoods in their natural habitat, a tie-in to the two other Redwood scavenger hunt sites. At the end of the table, I placed a collection box, which participants could drop their completed cards into. I later delivered the postcards to the Davis City Council.
